High Gloss Conference Table with Painted Inlay Part 3

The next step is to apply the polyester sealer. I use Ilva TG1323 . To spray you apply a full wet coat and allow to dry for 1/2 hour and then spray another coat wet on wet. You continue to do this until the grain is fully filled. Usually 3 to 4 times. You can build up to 20 mils of finish.

After the polyester sealer has dried overnight I begin the flattening process. Usually a 6" Dynabrade sander is perfect for this job but on a critical surface like high gloss black I may start with a long board first. I sand the entire top until all the shiny spots are gone using dry 400 grit sandpaper. These are low spots and you can't just sand where the low spots are. You must feather out the entire area to avoid dips in the final finish.

You're done sanding when the entire top is an even sheen and the reflections are straight.

After the sanding is complete I spray a full coat of gloss 2K urethane on the top. For this table I used Ilva's TP60 gloss urethane.

These pictures are of the finish from off the gun. The table will now sit for a week and be wet sanded with 1500 grit 3M Imperial finishing film then 3000 grit and buffed to a high gloss with 3m Perfect It compound.

  1. Hi Rick, That is one fantastic reflection in that table!

Is there much of a difference between vinyl sealer and polyester sealer?

    1. Polyester is a MUCH higher build finish than vinyl sealer.
